The World’s End is the famous End of the World and the beginning of a spectacular sight. It is located at the southern end of Horton Plains Park at an altitude of 2140m and descends to 900 meters.

Sri Baktha Hanuman Kovil

The Chinmaya mission of Sri Lanka has built a temple with Lord Hanuman as the presiding deity. The temple is on a stunning location that looks out towards part of the Kotmale valley approximately 40 minutes drive from Spring Acre on the A5 highway in the direction of Kandy. According to the legend, this is where Hanuman searched for Sita in the jungles above and behind the temple. There is supposed to be a stretch of barren land known as the ‘Chariot Path' on which Ravana took Sita to Ashoka Vatika to showcase the beauty of his kingdom to her. There is also said to be a pond - the ‘Sita Tear Pond' - here, which was formed from Sita's tears. The temple itself is one of the more enterprising establishments devoted to this legend, and contains a granite statue of Lord Hanuman that is said to be over 40 feet tall.It is believed that Lord Hanuman was searching for Sitadevi from these hills of Ramboda. The Ramboda area is believed to be an area where Rama's forces were gathered against Ravana. Ram Padai means Rama's Force. The hills of Ramboda is also believed where Hanuman was searching for Sitadevi. On every full moon day special poojas are conducted and witnessed by thousands of devotees. Senthooram” is being appiled to Sri Baktha Hanuman. “Senthooram” symbolises victory. “Senthooram” is only offered at Hanuman temples Flowers, silk and different colored wool is also used to make garlands for special occasions. Other items are used for decoration of the temple, especially a brass statue of Sri Baktha Hanuman. Garlands made of flowers are available for a nominal charge to be offered at the Sri Baktha Hanuman temple ever since its inception in 1999. The belief is that “Hanuman safeguards whoever who believes in Hanuma”.

Lake Gregory

Gregory Lake was created in 1873 by the British era Governor at the time, Sir William Gregory, supposedly for the purpose of providing electricity. However the lake was mainly used for leisure and recreation after it was built. At its peak of fame, Gregory Lake was the most prominent attraction in the area and was used a place to relax by many visitors. Recently the hilly district of Nuwara Eliya received a complete facelift by the government. With these renovations, the Gregory Lake area, which is located right in the center of the Nuwara Eliya town, has been converted into a sort of Lake Park with many recreational activities. Now visitors can follow the ancient British era tradition of relaxing picnics on the shore of the lake, or more modern leisure activities such as rides in swan shaped paddle boats, normal boatrides, pony rides along the shore, water walking balls, watersports such as jetskis, windsurfing and etc. As such with these many attractions Gregory Lake is a family friendly historic location of SriLanka, attracting many holiday makers who visit the country.

Galway's Land National Park

One of Sri Lanka's newest (2006) and smallest (29 sq hectares) national parks, Galway's Land is a dense patch of montane forest a couple of kilometres east of town. It is renowned for its birdlife, including 10 Sri Lankan endemics, as well as buffalo, wild boar, barking deer and other mammals. There's very little on-site information, but guides are available (by donation) from the park office and a 2km-long walking trail also leaves from here.

Victoria Park

Named after Queen Victoria’s 60th jubilee coronation and established in 1897, it has a land mass of 27 acres. This is a place where most people, specially holiday makers never fail to visit and enjoy the beautifully laid out gardens with the colourful flora and fauna which are maintained beautifully by the municipality. The flowers are in full bloom in March, April and May and again in August and September. There is a separate area for the kids too. Easily accessible as it is located right in the city centre and yet one does not feel that it is in the city Centre.

Single Tree Hill

The word “Single Tree” has been in existence from time immemorial. An excellent view of the sun rise can be seen from the top of this mountain. Situated 6890 ft above meansea level and takes about 90 minutes to reach the top. Single Tree hill is the best vantage point to observe the beauty of Nuwara Eliya and the beauty of Haggala Mountain range. Single Tree Mountain unravels the spectacular views of the entire Nuwara Eliya Town including other mountains such as Piduruthalagala and Haggala mountains. After trekking through tea plantations one reaches the top where there is just 1 single tree. This is the 7th highest mountain in Sri Lanka and is easily accessible. If one gets to the top around 5.30 a.m. – 7.00 a.m. one can see the best cloud formations around Sri Lanka and also the reflection of the mountain through Gregory Lake. On a very clear day one can see Piduruthalagala Mountain(Pedro Mountain), Lovers leap falls, Lake Gregory and urban areas of Nuwara Eliya in the northern valley and the southern valley of Adam’s Peak, Seven Virgin Hills, conical Hill and UdaRadella mountains.

This beautiful 30m high Lovers Leap fall in Nuwara Eliya is incipient of the streams and brooks of Sri Lanka’s highest mountain, the Piduruthalagala (2524m). It flows over hard granite ledges and the water is collected in a tank and used for drinking. In dry spells, the flow is languid The fall is said to derive its name from the tragic tale of a prince, who while hunting in the jungle, lost his way. He was rescued by a beautiful damsel, and the two became inseparable lovers. But the match was not to the liking of the prince’s subjects, so the two decided to immortalise their love by leaping from the top of the fall to their death.

Hakgala Botanical Gardens

A visit to the Hakgala Botanical Gardens would be the crowning glory of a tour of Nuwara Eliya. The sloping road from Nuwara Eliya to Badulla would lead to two old green gates that welcomes every visitor into one of the most alluring and beautiful gardens of Sri Lanka. The gardens were believed to be one of the highest in the world. Situated atop a slope under the peak of Hakgala rock. It was established in 1861 for the cultivation of Cinchona which was a flourishing commercial crop of the time. However once the tea industry replaced Cinchona, it was converted into a tea cultivation site. Finally being transformed into a botanical garden. The gardens were landscaped by the British who shaped the place into a spectacle of beauty, with greenery reflected by trees and a plethora of species of flowers set in the chilly climate of this hill country region. Some of the exotic species of flora originate from Netherlands, Japan, Britain and China. There are tropical species of trees, with Alpine and Palms on grasslands. The flower beds were created in decorative patterns and motifs which depict excellent garden architecture. The Hakgala Botanical Gardens have been divided into different named gardens which are Central pond and Bulb Garden, Lower Flower Garden, Rose Garden which houses large English roses, Orchid Glass House, Upper Flower Garden, Fernery, Rock Garden and Arboretum. There is a trail that connects the gardens to the Hakgala Nature Reserve which is home to diverse wildlife. The botanical garden is open daily from 8:00am to 5:30pm and the plant nursery closes at 3pm. There are wheelchairs available for hire for the disabled and feeble.
